ROCK Celtic closed the gap on league leaders Duleek – temporarily at least – with this convincing home win on Thursday night against their promoted opponents who have made a useful start in the Premier Division.
The champions of 2009 and 2010 were simply too good for the Meath outfit on their own patch, and only for the excellent form of their goalkeeper OMP would have suffered a heavier defeat.
Rock had the points in the bag at the interval, having opened up a 3-0 lead courtesy of a well-taken brace of goals by Kevin McArdle and another by Mark McGeown, one of a number of players to return to the Seasiders’ line-up.
The visitors’ goalkeeper made one brilliant save after another to keep the scoreline the same until late on when Rock scored twice in quick succession.
The first of those ironically resulted from a blunder by the keeper when David Ward’s powerful chest-high shot from outside the box flew straight at him, but he mis-handled it and the ball squirmed into the net.
Paddy Quinn made amends for a number of missed opportunities with a fine finish from the edge of the box for the winners’ final goal.
