U11 Premier: Rock Celtic 4-0 Bellurgan Utd

Rock Celtic U11’s notched up another convincing 4-0 win at the weekend – this time against rivals Bellurgan United. Both sides were fairly evenly matched in the opening period though the home side should really have been several goals ahead early in the game when strikers Mark Leavy and Gavin Gilmore both had great opportunities to get on the score sheet.

Rock started to dominate proceedings midway through the first half with some great play by midfielders Josh Hanna and Fiachra O’Hanlon in particular. A ferociously struck free kick from Josh 40 yards out smashed the underside of the cross bar, came down behind the goal line and back into play. With the home supporters roaring “Goal” at the referee Rock’s Mark Leavy was taking no chances and powerfully headed the rebounding ball back into the net.

The second goal came after some good work by Gavin Gilmore playing a nicely weighted ball to Leavy inside the penalty area who then set the ball back into the patch of incoming midfielder Steve Kamtchou for an unstoppable shot. The Bellurgan team dug deep and had a couple of chances themselves however the Rock defence of Layo Aadebanjo (who had another great game), Shane Sharkey, Alex Gough and Cillian Duffy held tight and it was 2-0 to Rock at the interval.

The second half strike force of Sennan Carroll and young Evan McEnteggert looked equally dangerous and it wasn’t long before hotshot McEnteggert showed great composure in front of goal to put Rock 3 up. When Dara Quinn was taken down midway through the second half, Josh Hanna lined up the resulting free kick, this time he struck it low and hard past the Bellurgan keeper to put Rock 4-0 ahead. The Bellurgan players showed great character and never game up, going all out attack for the last 10 minutes and forcing at least two wonderful saves from the very impressive Jack Donoghue in the Rock goal. No doubt Bellurgan will look forward to exacting revenge when they entertain Rock in the return leg over the next few months.
