WOODVIEW Reserves kept their good run going with a hard-fought win against local rivals Rock Celtic.
Both teams started well and from the off they kept the ball on the ground with some entertaining football on show. The home side were first to threaten when Marius Jasiskis smashed a shot off the crossbar from just inside the box.
Rock also had a good chance in the 15th minute when Eddie Smith shot from long range, but his effort just sailed wide. The deadlock was broke in the 20th minute through Woodview captain Gerard Rafferty who finished superbly from the edge of the area.
Woodview’s lead didn’t last long as just few minutes later a mistake at the back allowed Conor Smith get in behind the Woodview defence and he finished past Thomas Mulvey.
At 1-1 Rock had a great opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty after Shane English hacked down Chris Connolly in the box.
Gary Lennon stepped up to take the spot kick, but he found Mulvey in top form with a super save to his left and from the follow-up Gerard Garvey made a wonderful goal-saving block to keep the score level.
With half an hour gone Woodview went 2-1 up after English played top scorer Barry Carr through and he made no mistake to slot the ball past keeper Damien McCrink.
The second half began with Woodview on top and they made it 3-1 in the 55th minute when Martin Murphy smashed a free kick off the bar from all off 25 yards. Midfielder Jimmy Byrne, who was outstanding throughout, was quickest to react and he had a simple tap-in.
At 3-1 Woodview almost killed the game off when Sean Bailey went on a mazy run and shot narrowly wide, but with time running out Rock began to peg Woodview back and they were rewarded for some pressure when the ball fell to Smith in the area and he finished to the keeper’s left to net his second of the game.
However, Woodview defended superbly in the closing stages and held on.
