A BRACE of goals by David Ward, one early and the other late on, secured what was a laboured victory for Rock over their second division opponents in this Kilmessan Shield tie at Sandy Lane on Friday.

Ward hit a screamer of a shot from all of 30 yards to give the home side a flying start with the game barely started, but from there it was a long procession of wasted scoring opportunities by a totally dominant Rock, down to a considerable extent to outstanding goalkeeping by the Cavan keeper, but also feeble finishing by Rock players.

It left the way open to Cavan to salvage a draw, and John Rogers in the home goal had to be at his most alert to pull off a number of vital saves to prevent this happening before Ward finally sealed the outcome.

Again it was a goal of high quality, created from a short corner ten minutes from time. Paddy Quinn collected the ball on the left and crossed into the middle of the penalty area where Ward, unchallenged, glanced the deftest of headers into the top corner of the net. ROCK CELTIC: John Rogers, Ross Quigley, David Hoey, Chris Ward, Cormac McArdle, Kevin McArdle, Paul Gore, Paddy Quinn, Gerard McSorley (John Sharkey), David Ward, Jamie McCaul (Conor Smyth).
